CDP News: Nov. 14, 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week was cut down due to the holiday on Tuesday, but we still stayed quite busy.

Our biggest effort this week was in supporting the Joining Forces Wellness Week 2014. The CDP provided technical support for the series of webinars each day this week. These webinars focused on a variety military behavioral health issues. If you missed out on these great presentation, next week we will be posting recordings, along with supplemental material, on the event page here.

Other upcoming online training opportunities will include a Prolonged Exposure Therapy training delivered via Adobe Connect on 18-19 December. Participants will not have to install any software on their computer. They are required to purchase a copy of the PE manual and ensure they have a working microphone to participate in the role-play portions of the training. Registration is $27 and comes with 13.5 CEUs. The past sessions we’ve done have filled up quickly and generated lengthy stand-by lists, so we suggest anyone interested in attending sign up quickly!

We’re down to the last two weeks to register for our final 1-week training session of the year. The Southeast Regional Civilian 1-Week Training will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. Check out the event’s page for more details or to register.

The CDP has created a new program for those interested in a career in military behavioral health, CDP Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Internship.  We’re partnering with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) with this program which is deisgned to raise awareness of military behavioral health careers and to increase students’ competitiveness for military-focused internships. This six-day training course, held from 8-13 June 2015, will bring participants to D.C. to receive training in a variety of topics. The CDP will assist with costs of travel, room and board. For most attendees, this financial assistance will be sufficient to cover all costs. We also encourage students local to the D.C. area to apply and attend the program. For more information, please visit the program’s page here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column on our blog was by Dr. Tim Rogers. In it, he took a look at a recent piece which ”summarized major findings from the New Haven Trauma Competency Consensus Conference”. Dr. Rogers highly recommends the article for anyone involved in trauma-related services. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

That’s it for this time around. We hope everyone enjoys the weekend before it gets too cold out there! We’ll see you back here next week for a new entry in the By the Numbers column.
