CDP News: Sept 19, 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Fall is right around the corner, with the change of seasons comes all kinds of new training opportunities!

Fall means that school is back in session, which also means that our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program is also ramping up once again. Next Thursday, 25 September, we’ll be headed to Las Cruces, NM to present at New Mexico State University for our first event of the season. Then on 1 October we will be at the American College Counseling Association Conference in San Antonio, TX. For more information about the UC4 or to learn how you can bring the program to your local college or university, please visit the program page here.

We had two separate training events running all this week. The first was our Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology course. The other was the Pacific Northwest Regional 1-Week Civilian training event in the Portland metro area. Running one week-long event is tough enough, but running two on opposite sides of the country is something else entirely! However, thanks to the great staff and participants we had, things went quite well actually.

If you’re interested in attending our 1-week civilian training event, you’ve one more chance to attend a 1-week training in 2014. Our final 1-week training of the year, the  Southeast Regional 1-Week Civilian training, will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. Head over to the event page here for more information or to sign up.

We’d like to remind people about our Registration for our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register please visit the program page here.

In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective was by Dr. Diana Dolan. She reviewed the book “Soul Repair,” which examines the concept of moral injury. This is an important topic that can affect many Service members and Veterans, so it’s nice to have a resource to learn more about the concept. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
