CDP News: Mar. 27, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s the end of March and spring is right around the corner. We’re all looking forward to the end of a dreary winter!

The weather didn’t slow us down any this week though. In support of the Star Behavioral Health Providers Program, we sent teams of trainers out to both Macon, GA and Grand Rapids, MI to lead programs for providers in those states. Next up, we’re off to Logansport, IN next Wednesday. For more information on the states participating in this program and the various training tiers, check out the SBHP section of the website. Our University Counseling Center Core Competency program headed to Pennsylvania to present at Slippery Rock University on Wednesday. On Thursday, we’ll be headed to West Point in NY to present the UC4 program for the ACCA Northeast Regional Conference. To see how you can bring the UC4 program to your local college or university, click here.

In addition to our in-person training, on Thursday and Friday we will be holding a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training via Second Life. This two-day training will provide participants instruction in CPT, an evidence-based cognitive-behavioral treatment for PTSD. It’s one of our most requested training topics and this event filled up very quickly. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration opens for future events, you can sign up for our online events list here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Holly O’Reilly. In it, she discusses the concept of mindfulness, including exactly what it is and isn’t.  Mindfulness is important for all providers for several reasons and well-worth learning more about. Also in the blog, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

Speaking of learning, if you’re interested in learning more about military culture, we suggest checking out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each of the four modules in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam.

That’s it for this time around. Enjoy the weekend everyone and join us back here next week for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
